Sana Durrani set a new precedent when she became among the rare women in Balochistan to contest on a general seat in the 2024 elections.
Only 14 women contested for 16 general seats of National Assembly of Balochistan.
“In our male-dominated society, only men believe they can contest politics,” Sana told JBConnects.
“Furthermore, we live in tribal system, and contesting general election is very expensive here.” She added.
Despite that Sana took up the challenge and became among the 38 candidates of Balochistan who contested on general seats.
Given that women don’t generally own property made it even more difficult for her.
“Women candidate don’t have properties and they have not income generation resources. They usually step back from contesting elections because they don’t have enough money and resources,” she said.
Mostly people vote for men candidates as compared to female candidates.
The issues for women are compounded by a trial society like Balochistan where tribesmen are more comfortable dealing with men.
Despite that women like Sana believe that raising awareness is critical to gaining acceptance and bringing change.
