Some 138 women incarcerated in Karachi Central Prison celebrated Eid in prison, along with their 28 small children. They include women imprisoned for murder, drug cases and various minor offences.
Some of their children were born inside the prison and know nothing about the outside world. These women especially miss mingling with their near ones on festive occasions like Eid. They are reminded of this when forbidden from stepping out during the holidays.
Despite special programs organized by jail authorities, the women say that a cage fetters their freedoms and even if painted with gold, it remains a prison.
