Out of 175 registered political parties, 23 religious parties participated in the election 2024.
While these religious parties fielded more candidates and had a more vigorous presence through their campaign ads, they failed to make a dent in the elections.
In Sindh province, 539 candidates from religious parties contested for 61 constituencies of the National Assembly and 130 constituencies for the provincial assembly.
They included Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam, Tehrik-i-Labaik and Pakistan Muslim Leage (Central) representing Hafiz Saeed.
In the Karachi division alone, 74 candidates contested for the 22 National Assembly constituencies, and 160 candidates for the Provincial Assembly’s 47 constituencies.
All the parties ended up having a poor presence in the body politic. The TLP, which had made significant inroads in the 2018 elections, also could not make a dent in the system.
The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (led by ousted prime minister Imran Khan) which won a landslide victory from KP, ended up in alliance with Sunni Ittehad.
While JUI (F) won four seats n the National Assembly, Hafiz Saeed’s PML won three seats and Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen won one seat only.
