The month of Ramadan was hugely challenging in 2024, when despite the newly elected government’s claims to lower prices of essentials, people suffered from price hikes.

Sellers argued that difficulty in accessing gas and electricity had forced them to raise prices. On the other hand, consumers said that price controls were not being observed because sellers had resorted to hoarding and profiteering. Moreover, they argued that officials deputed to price controls had resorted to bribery

Consumers stressed the need to monitor black marketers, who stored their goods for export and only sold when they saw a profit.
