The architecture of the historic red fort in Muzaffarabad, Kashmir, known as Ratta Qila shows it was used for defensive purposes during war times.

The 450-year-old fort has turrets and spaces that are typically reserved for warriors to fire from and stop armies from advancing.

It was founded in 1549 during the Chak dynasty and completed by Sultan Muzaffar Khan, the founder of Muzaffarabad.

The fort was also used to administer the territory under Dogra Sikh rulers Maharaja Gulab Singh and Ranbir Singh.

However, creeping encroachment by power elite has led the area of the fort to shrink drastically.

Moreover, renovation funds allocated by the Culture Department were not spent on time, as a result of which its improvements are becoming unaffordable.

This, despite the fact that the fort has the unique capacity to attract visitors because of its location between India and Pakistan.
