Ship owners are nowadays attempting to escape the carbon tax imposed on pollution causing vessels, by having them scrapped. This is creating an opportunity for ship breakers in Gadani, Balochistan, where the scrap material is extracted for valuable materials used in construction, in the cottage industry and agriculture .At Gadani, ships are bought from the Middle East, Europe and Africa through middle men. Once they arrive, laborers break up the ships to make iron tools, nets and other items. While London was once the hub of the ship breaking industry, even in Pakistan the business boomed between 2008 to 2018. Those associated with the industry maintain that heavy taxation on imports has hurt ship breaking in Pakistan. According to them, as more ships are discarded due to the carbon tax, Pakistan can once again revive the flagging industry.
