The creation of big dams in Pakistan administered Kashmir, while providing much needed hydro power to Kashmiris, has diverted the flow of the rivers. This has killed off a good deal of marine life that previously thrived in the regions. Melting glaciers have further created loss of water. The residents have urged that instead of creating large hydropower projects, smaller environmentally friendly methods be adopted to obtain power. They maintain that in a period of climate change, it is important to keep the rivers flowing and marine life healthy, while caring for the needs of the human population.
