Mother Tongues Need Recognition
The international conference on Sindhi language, Indus Script and Endangered indigenous languages has called on the government to develop and give national status to all mother tongues.
The Sindhi Language Authority organized the two-day conference on May 4-5, 2024, at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi.
Writers, intellectuals and linguists representing communities across the nation called the preservation of indigenous languages as a method of preserving collective memories and preserving history.
In total there were 17 sessions addressed by scholars, urging ways to preserve the script and mother tongues of all communities.
There was a recommendation to adopt the Roman script for those who were unable to read in their mother tongues, in order to keep open lines of communication.
