Sindh is home to one of South Asia’s most promising wind corridors, stretching nearly 180 kilometres across Thatta, Jhimper and Gharo. Wind farms set up with the help of foreign companies are generating electricity that is stored in batteries and sent through high transmission lines to Punjab. The result is downgrading of electricity to industries in the upcountry regions and non availability of power to industries in Sindh.
The report examines how the wind power that is being tapped in Sindh is lost because of the failure to manage it effectively. Normally, industries are located next to power generation. However, industry has packed up from Sindh and left because the energy produced next to them is not available. Even industries in Karachi are not provided with the power generated by the wind farms in their vicinity. In a nutshell, the report examines how mismanagement of its valuable resource is yet to benefit Pakistan’s industrial growth.
