Lawyers Tragedy Fuels Mission
August 12, 2016, was a turning point for Pakistan’s legal fraternity. The president of Balochistan Bar Association, Bilal Anwar Kansi was targeted and killed that morning. As lawyers arrived to Civil Hospital, Quetta, to receive his body, there was a huge explosion.
A suicide bomber blew himself up, killing 56 lawyers and several others on the spot. Among them was former president of the Balochistan Bar, Baz Mohammed Kakar. Although eight years have passed since the tragedy, the legal fraternity is still in shock at the sudden demise of their senior cadre.
Kakar’s brother, Lal Mohammed Kakar has kept their memory alive by creating digital libraries that can be accessed across the country.
Apart from several libraries in Quetta and Zhob, the libraries have been created in Khanozai, Kuchlak, Muslim Bagh and Loralai.
They provide a space for young people who want to study law and enter civil service. A library for women only is also in the works.
