Ranikot, located 90 km from Hyderabad, Sindh, is sometimes referred to as the Great Wall of Sindh.
Its significance lies in the fact that the Talpur tribe used the fort it encompasses – stretching over 20 miles, as a bastion against the British.
The origin of the fort is still disputed. Researchers date it to the Greek, Sassanid, Scythian and Parthian era.
Historical records maintained by the British mention it in their 1812 records, leading historians to believe that it was constructed hundreds of years ago – and subsequently renovated by the Talpurs.
The fort has several prominent gates, Including Sher Ghar, Miri Kot , Mohan Kot , Aamri , Sunn and Shah Pole Gate.
The most prominent aspect of Ranikot is the long winding snake-like wall, leading many to draw parallels with the Great Wall of China.
