Kashmir has adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle the problems of overcrowding, pollution and garbage disposal that plague cities across Pakistan. Muzaffarabad, which is in the grip of climate change is adopting a waste disposal system that will collect unsightly garbage and bury it away from human habitation. More importantly, locals have jumped in to protect Kashmir’s natural beauty by planting fruit trees that not only produce fruit but prevent landslides. They are now taking the plantations higher on the hill tops so that the trees can absorb carbon dioxide and improve the air quality of the region.
