Balochistan has the highest number of tuberculosis patients in Pakistan. According to the World Health Organization, at least 30,000 patients in Balochistan suffer from TB. The disease is spread from one person to another and can acquire complex forms. It manifests in coughing and throwing up blood. Balochistan’s doctors say that the sprawling nature of the terrain is one reason why TB cases go undetected, and spread rapidly in the province. Absence of literacy and education further prevents patients from realizing they have TB Complicating the disease is the fact that a number of patients acquire drug resistance and therefore do not complete the regimen.
