Precious fluorite minerals are being extracted from Loralai, Balochistan through back breaking labor. Known as gems that have the ‘largest variety of colors,’ fluorite is used to make jewelry as well for smelting glass and other forms of industrial production. But for laborers in Balochistan, separating the rocks is not only hard on the eyes, but the work gives them very little income. The fluorite is taken to Karachi for further processing, which involves unnecessary cost and hardship. Locals urge that the government modernize the extraction of fluorite and invest in a refinery plant in Loralai District, to enable everyone to benefit.
