This is the story of Mohd Tahir Mir, lovingly known as Dr Eli. Though not a formally qualified veterinarian, he is a Grade1 employee of the Baltistan Livestock Dept whose dedication and lifelong passion for animals allows villagers to call him 24/7, making him a lifeline for countless farming families.
When Tahir Mir joined the department in 2022, it was the fulfillment of his childhood dream. He spent over a year closely observing senior veterinary doctors, learning from their experience and serving in remote areas.Whether it is day or night, Shardu, Shigar , Kharmang or Ghanche, one call is enough for Dr. Eli to respond. Over the past fifteen years, he has treated and saved nearly 1000 to 1500 animals handling cases of poisoning, severe illness and difficult late-night deliveries. His mentor, Dr Ghulam Rasool Sandoos continues to guide him to this day, along with consultation by senior doctors.
Eli says people are surprised when he attends to their animals without charging any fees. Under his guidance, farmers like Eli have adopted modern dairy practices, successfully raising Dutch breed cows in Baltistan for the first time.
Working in the cold, difficult mountain ranges of Baltistan, Eli has become a house-hold name – even while he serves without desire for wealth or fame.
