Tando Soomro Leads the Way for Sindh
Tando Soomro, located only 40 km from Hyderabad, has demonstrated that if villagers show honesty, integrity and a capacity to learn, they can change their destinies. Ironically, it was under Gen. Zia ul Haq that dacoits roamed free in Sindh and also targeted Tando Soomro. The village elected to defend itself through training youth to fight off dacoits, together with installing safe and secure systems for residents. Over the course of the last few decades, the village has faced climate change, floods and the paucity of funds. However, a system of tax collection has enabled it to maintain security, cleanliness, access to clean drinking water, a walking track for exercise and educational institutions – whose graduates have represented Pakistan at the highest levels.
