Blind Singer Makes Waves

Renowned singers have emerged from Tharparkar desert, Sindh, a region known for its natural beauty, history, and culture.
In Kasbo, Nagarparkar, a small village on the border of India and Pakistan, a blind musician – Yusuf Faqir has earned a name in music.
He gets a stipend from the Sindh government, but also earns the most when visitors arrive from far and wide to hear him perform.
Faqeer sings the Sufi songs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, Bhagat Kabeer and Meera Bai.

Although visually impaired, Yousif says that he covers the harmonium with cloth to feel and play along.
Yousif Faqeer has won many awards. He often sings at Rama Pir Mandar, weddings, and other events in Sindh.
He has sung for the last 40 years, but now he wants to take a rest, and teach the younger generation about music.
His gift has been passed on the new generation, with his son and grandson singing with awe-inspiring zeal.
