A Sindh Food Authority (SDA) survey in Karachi has found detergent and other harmful chemicals are being used in milk that is sold at several tea shops. Officials said samples were collected from different outlets and sent to laboratories, where tests confirmed adulteration. Tea shop owners denied that the milk they mixed into tea contained chemicals and detergents. According to them, tea drinkers could see the difference when they boiled unfiltered milk, which tended to boil rather than fall flat. However, health experts warn that findings of adulterated milk have yielded chemicals that can damage the stomach, liver and particularly kidneys. Furthermore, doctors note that young people without any preconditions like high blood pressure or diabetes have been found suffering from kidney problems. Given the amount of tea consumed daily, concerns have intensified over SDA findings and highlighted the need for stricter monitoring to ensure that a routine cup of tea does not turn into a serious health risk.
