Moomal Ranois is a Sindhi love story that spans Rajasthan in India and Sindh in Pakistan. Momal is a princess who wins over Rano from another princely estate by sheer beauty. The difficulty of uniting with her beloved drives her to machinations that put Rano into despair. The tale itself speaks of Moomal’s beauty and intellect, guarded by a challenge that only the worthy could pass. Many failed until Rano, linked to Hamir Soomro of Amar kot, succeeded.
Moomal is believed to have had four palaces) in Jaisalmer, Amar Kot, Mathelo near Daharki reflecting the historical expanse of Sindh. Archaeological excavations at the site in 2025 revealed brick wall foundations, along with clay pots and coins, offering tangible links between legend and history. The excavations were earlier conducted in 2018 and 2005.. Today, only ruins survive at Mathelo, a few kilometers from Ghotki. Local residents have struggled for years to protect these remains and continue to demand greater attention to research to connect with the treasures of the past.
The folk tale, epitomized by Sindhi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai has also been compared to the Greek legend of Orpheus, where the lover was driven to destruction by his beloved.. Bhittai devoted an entire chapter to Moomal Rano in Shah jo Risalo, still sung proudly by folk artists today..
Moomal Rano is not just a story, it is a living symbol of Sindh’s heritage, narrated by parents to their children and grandchildren.
