Jhimpir is widely known as a wind corridor in Southern Sindh but it is now gaining recognition as a Community Reserve Zone This has been achieved through the efforts of conservationist, Kamal Palari. Over the past two years, Kamal has been working to reintroduce butterflies into the local ecosystem, documenting over 50 species, including rare ones like the Lime Butterfly, Swallowtail, Salomon Arab, and Common Jokers. In so doing, he has been able to introduce species not seen for almost a century. This small sanctuary attracts photographers and nature lovers alike. It comes alive after the monsoons when wild flora blooms and supports diverse butterfly populations. So far, around 40 species have been recorded locally, with estimates suggesting the number could exceed 100.
Butterflies play a vital role as pollinators and bio-indicators of a healthy environment. Experts like Shireen Abdullah emphasize that protecting butterflies is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and the food chain. The loss of butterflies could trigger a chain reaction threatening many other species.
