Pano Colony in Tando Allahyar, Pakistan’s first zero carbon model village was designed to withstand floods and climate change. Designed by a female architect, Yasmin Lari, the Kohli community villagers can now boast a sustainable and dignified way of livi.

Built on saline land, the 100 eco-friendly houses are made with bamboo frames coated with mud. They combine traditional wisdom with climate-resilient design. Previously, these homes collapsed during rains, but now, even during floods they remain safe. Minor repairs are done by the villagers themselves.

Pioneered by the Heritage Foundation, Pano Colony promotes environmental awareness and self-reliance. Residents were trained to plant trees on saline soil. A school, whose roofs collapsed during rains and interrupted studies, now stays solid.

Among the symbols of empowerment here is  Dhani’s handmade stove a locally crafted innovation that does not use gas but runs with eco friendly technology.

Pono Colony is a model of hope, resilience and sustainable living that inspires nearby communities to build safer, greener homes.
