At the foothills of the Karoonjhar mountains lies Palin Bazaar in age-old Nagarparkar, Tharparkar. Once a bustling trade hub known locally as Ningrano, this market reflects the region’s ancient craftsmanship and sustainable architecture. The bazaar was redesigned in the 18th century by British Deputy Commissioner Dr. Palin and is named after him.. Built in an “L” shape with wooden beams and clay tiles called Nariyo, the market’s unique design kept it cool even in Thar’s harshest heat.
Experts believe the structure’s strength and beauty make it valuable even by modern standards. In many ways, the cover emulates Spanish rooftops that are able to endure heat and tremors. Though Palin Bazaar now seems deserted, its weathered walls still whisper stories of Thar’s culture, resilience, and artistry. With preservation, this forgotten market could once again shine as a proud symbol of Sindh as well as cater to tourists who visit the desert region when it rains – causing vegetation and its famed peacocks to come alive.
