Dishonor Killings In Pakistan

A couple was brutally murdered in the name of “honor,” about 50 km from Quetta in Balochistan. They had been invited for a meal by relatives, but were killed in front of their young children. The suspects escaped, leaving the family shattered.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, more than 400 people were killed for “honor” in 2024, though rights groups say the true figure may be closer to 1,000 annually. Most cases remain hidden, surfacing only when videos or leaked reports reach the public.

A similar killing in Quetta earlier this summer gained attention after footage of the crime went viral, sparking protests and renewing debate on the issue. Human rights advocates warn that honor killings have risen by 30 percent since the early 1990s, an alarming trend made worse by silence, stigma, and underreporting. Each case underscores how deeply entrenched the tribal practice remains, and how urgently it demands accountability.
