As monsoon rains return to Karachi, the city teeters on the edge of another urban flooding crisis. Major stormwater drains especially Qayyumabad Nala are choked with plastic, waste, and wild overgrowth, turning them into garbage dumps rather than functioning drainage systems. Nearly 550 drains including 44 major ones haven’t been maintained in years. Low-lying areas like Defence View, Khayaban-e-Bukhari, Manzoor Colony, PECHS, and Bahadurabad face high flood risk, with blocked outfalls at Qayyumabad likely to cause dangerous overflow. Locals report smoke and stench from trash burning, highlighting both environmental and health hazards. Despite th Supreme Court bans on billboards, these still hang from buildings and roads, posing fatal risks during high winds and rain.
