The Muzaffarabad Physical Rehabilitation Center (MPRC) stands as a beacon of healing for thousands living with physical disabilities in Pakistan administered Kashmir. Established in 2006 as a response to the catastrophic 2005 earthquake, MPRC is a joint initiative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the AJK Health Department. It remains the only facility of its kind in the region, offering free, comprehensive care that includes prosthetics, orthotics, physiotherapy, and psychosocial support.
Over the years, MPRC has provided over 60,000 services to more than 9,300 permanently disabled patients, many of whom are victims of cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) . These injuries are not just numbers, they are stories of shattered lives and hard won resilience.Individual cases underscore the severity of the situation. Yasira Riasat, a 12-year-old girl from Battal sector, lost her leg in a shelling incident. Noor Fatima, a seven-month old infant, lost four fingers of her right hand due to Indian shelling. These cases reflect the ongoing human cost of the LoC conflict, where civilians often children bear the brunt of violence.
MPRC not only restores physical mobility but also dignity and hope, offering free accommodation, quality meals, and a nurturing environment to patients and their families. In a region scarred by conflict and disaster, MPRC is a lifeline of compassion and care, helping victims reclaim their futures step by step
