In a groundbreaking move, Sindh Integrated Emergency & Health Services 1122 in Sanghar advertised for female drivers women and received applicants – who are now working as female ambulance drivers for the first time. This initiative began with two young women – Iram Jatt and Shireen Shah, who were already skilled in driving.

They now transport patients and accident victims across Sanghar and nearby villages, challenging gender norms. Initially met with surprise, their presence has since inspired other women to train for the role. The women not only transport critically ill patients from hospital to hospital, but also move them from villages to the nearest health facility.

With more women joining, this initiative is paving the way for shattering gender norms and paving the way for greater female participation in emergency services across Sindh.
