A suicide attack that killed Darul Uloom Haqqania’s patron-in-chief, Maulana Hamid ul Haq and six others on Feb 28, 2025, in Akora Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa- just one day before Ramadan, has hit at the heart of Taliban founders. Maulana Hamid was the son of Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, who trained jihadis to take over Afghanistan in 1996. It gave birth to the Haqqani network, which lodged militant attacks on US forces when they toppled the Taliban in 2001. Mullah Omar trained in Akora Khattak, as did Afghanistan’s interior minister Sirajuddin Haqqani – who has a $10 million bounty on his head. Investigations are underway in the attack in which the Islamic State has been named. Pakistan Afghanistan relations, which deteriorated after US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, have reached a new low after the latest incident.
