Almost every resident of Karachi has heard tales of Manghopir and its legendary crocodiles. Some believe they are mystical beings, while others associate them with spiritual figures. Nearly 200 crocodiles currently inhabit the Mangophir lake. They are visited by people suffering from skin diseases, who believe they can be healed by bathing in the hot springs.

According to Khalifa Sajjad the crocodiles are a sacred gift from Baba Farid, and are visited from far and wide for their alleged spiritual powers. Many bring meat as offerings, either as a ritual or simply out of goodwill. However, the limited space in the lake often leads to fights among the crocodiles and causes them injuries. The wounded crocodiles don’t get any medical treatment, but the sulphur rich water naturally heals their wounds.

Manghopir is surrounded by myths, particularly regarding the crocodiles that reside near the shrine. In particular Khalifa Sajjad regrets that Youtubers exaggerate and fabricate stories about crocodiles, saying that these reports have little factual value.

Manghopir remains an iconic spiritual and cultural landmark, where faith, history, and folklore intertwine, attracting visitors seeking blessings and those wanting to view the growing numbers of crocodiles.
