Bypassing Fundamentalists in Rural Sindh
Hotel cinemas have fast replaced the declining entertainment of yester years, when audiences bought tickets and closeted themselves for hours to watch a movie. Instead Pkr 20 for tea allows rural laborers to sit in ‘chai khanas’ and watch movies for hours. The films may be new or old classics. They allow peasants and workers, freed from laboring in the fields, to be entertained cheaply. Even more new is the fact that youth download movies and sit under trees to watch films. All of which begs the question of how far will technology change cultural habits.
