As winter blankets the city of Quetta, its markets come alive with the vibrant colors of Kandhari pomegranates, sourced from orchards in the districts of Arghand and Khakrez.
These delicious fruits make their way to Quetta through the Spin Boldak-Chaman route, creating a buzz in the city’s bustling marketplaces.
Doctors suggest that the consumption of pomegranates can aid in heart health, maintain blood pressure and improve circulation to the heart, adding an additional layer of appeal to these seasonal treasures.
Saeed Ahmed, a local merchant, takes pride in the uniqueness of the Kandhari pomegranates, emphasizing their significance in the region.

“The Kandahari pomegranate is a specialty here; it’ the pride of Kandahar,” says Ahmed.
“We import directly from Kandahar and send them where they are requested,” he adds.
Highlighting the demand for these exclusive fruits, Ahmed says they are ordered by dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The Kandhari pomegranates weigh 16-18 kilos per box and boast a clean and vibrant color both inside and outside.
Their seeds, described as reddish, crispy, sweet, and soft, contribute to a delightful eating experience. With prices ranging from PKR 300-400 per kilo, the boxes fetch between PKR 1000 to 2000.
Shah Zeb, a resident of Quetta, attests to the popularity of Kandhari pomegranates, citing their purported benefits for kidney health.
Talha, another Quetta resident, expresses his enthusiasm for the ongoing pomegranate season, saying that people wait all year long for the fruit.
Kandhari pomegranates are available in Quetta until January, marking the culmination of the season. The waiting game then begins anew, with locals eagerly anticipating their return.
