Handmade reflects Bygone Era

Sindh holds the ajrak (cloth covering) as a significant symbol of its culture.

However, in the age of machines, the practice of buying handmade ajraks which deployed elaborate techniques has declined.

Instead of handmade ajraks, machines are turning out the prints at a lower price for consumers and easy profits for sellers.

Nonetheless, handmade Ajrak is still used as gifts and in important ceremonies with printed ajraks more popular than ever.

The center of the ajrak industry is located about 50 kilometers from Hyderabad, in Matiari and Bhitsah.

Here handmade ajrak is prepared in many stages, incorporating approximately 72 different items in the process. This includes the use of traditional and ancient methods, using saffron, chun, and gum.

Singer Abida Parveen is known to wear handmade ajrak, and folk artist Allan Fakir was also known to wear it.
