The beauty of Gilgit Baltistan comes alive in winter, when snow falls on the tall mountain peaks and glaciers gleam in the distance. Hotels opened in winter in Skardu, Shigar and Khaplu cater to winter tourism that includes ice skating, visiting Satpara Lake, Shangrila resort, Upper Kacchura Lake, a Cold Desert in Shigar, together with Shigar Fort, Hashopi Garden and water falls in Kharming Valley. Tourists come via passenger airlines and the Karakoram Highway. Tour operators say that if access to electricity were better, it would enable far more tourists to visit and enjoy the region’s natural wonders.
