A home-schooling initiative founded 37 years ago by Dr. Naseem Salahuddin in Defense Housing Society, Karachi, which began as a mobile school, has enabled Pakistani children to receive proper education.

The Citizen Education Development Foundation (CEDF) has assisted underprivileged children to achieve education, after which they’re admitted to regular schools.

Initially, the CEDF obtained a bus which would travel to the slum areas of Karachi and educate children who might have otherwise turned to beggary and menial jobs.

Over the years, the employees who worked in the Defense homes, themselves turned into teachers. At the same time, well-off, educated Defense residents put in their time and skills to turn around the future of some 50,000 children.

Notably, alumni like Mohammad Ejaz and Bushra Malik are testaments to the success of CEDF.

Mohammad Ejaz, now an entrepreneur, expressed gratitude to his teachers, emphasizing how they guided him to success.

37 Years and Still Rolling

Bushra Malik, a former student turned teacher, narrated that that the supportive environment of the home fostering a sense of belonging and spurred her learning.

The CEDF’s impact goes beyond the confines of its mobile classroom.

Liaqat Hussain, a dedicated teacher at CEDF, recalls the inception of the school when children lacked interest in education.

Now, he says, with 350-400 graduates in various professions, including doctors and police officers, the CEDF has achieved enduring success.

On December 23, 2023, the CEDF celebrated their journey with an event honoring teachers and students. Prizes were distributed among position holders, underscoring the commitment to academic excellence.

Ghazala Atta, another alumni turned teacher, shared her family’s story

In her words, six siblings started their education from the same mobile school. The institution’s support allowed them to pursue diverse careers, breaking the cycle of limited opportunities.

This innovative approach to home schooling serves as a role model for individuals to replicate such initiatives for underprivileged children in their areas.

The CEDF’s commitment to transforming lives through education continues to inspire and pave the way for a brighter future for countless children.
